#90: Team Malta At The European Grand Prix Series 2
Team Malta continued its European campaign at the European Grand Prix Series 2, held in Vršac, Serbia from 27–29 September, with athletes Michela Scerri and Alycia Cassar competing under the guidance of Coach Ditmir Vodinaj.
The event gathered some of Europe’s top-ranked athletes, offering an invaluable opportunity for Maltese competitors to test themselves against world-class opposition in one of the continent’s most prestigious Taekwondo series.
Michela Scerri – Composed and Competitive
Michela Scerri opened her campaign with a confident performance, defeating Teodora Kristić (Serbia) with a 2–0 round score. Her sharp timing, footwork, and tactical control stood out as she maintained composure throughout the match.
In the Round of 16, Michela faced Nicole Masala (Italy) — the tournament’s second seed and one of Europe’s rising powerhouses. Despite a determined effort and moments of strong defensive play, Michela fell 0–2 in rounds, ending her run with pride and valuable experience at elite level.
Alycia Cassar – Testing Herself Among Europe’s Best
Alycia Cassar, fresh off an impressive medal run earlier this season, stepped into the Round of 16 against Bromberger Lamprini (Greece), the event’s fourth seed. Despite a strong start and moments of promise, Alycia was defeated in her opening bout.
Facing one of Europe’s top-ranked athletes was a challenge that will further sharpen her readiness for future competitions.
A Step Forward for Malta
While no medals were secured this time, the European Grand Prix Series 2 provided an invaluable platform for growth. Both athletes gained firsthand experience competing at one of the highest levels in European Taekwondo — a vital step in Malta’s long-term development strategy.
Team Malta leaves Serbia with renewed motivation, valuable lessons, and eyes set firmly on the next challenge ahead.
