#114: Malta Taekwondo Association Congratulates Dr Karen Zammit Southernwood on ETU Appointment

The Malta Taekwondo Association proudly congratulates Dr Karen Zammit Southernwood on her appointment to the European Taekwondo Union (ETU) Safeguarding and Integrity Committee for the 2026–2027 term.

The appointment, officially confirmed by ETU President Sakis Pragalos on 18 May 2026, recognises Dr Zammit Southernwood’s extensive professional experience, integrity, and longstanding contribution to sport governance and athlete welfare.

This prestigious role places Malta at the heart of one of the most important areas in modern sport administration. The ETU Safeguarding and Integrity Committee plays a vital role in ensuring that Taekwondo across Europe continues to uphold the highest standards of ethics, athlete protection, fairness, transparency, and safe sporting environments.

Dr Karen Zammit Southernwood has built a respected career in sports governance and regulatory affairs. Over the years, she has worked extensively within the Maltese sporting sector, particularly through SportMalta, where she has served in senior regulatory and legal roles connected to governance, compliance, and integrity in sport. Her expertise has also been recognised internationally, including participation in global discussions related to safeguarding sport from corruption and strengthening sports governance structures.

Beyond her professional achievements, Dr Zammit Southernwood has long been associated with the Maltese Taekwondo community and has consistently supported the development of the sport locally. Her appointment reflects the growing reputation of Maltese Taekwondo administrators and professionals within the international sporting community.
