#110: Malta Taekwondo Association Climbs 23 Places in World Ranking

The Malta Taekwondo Association (MTA) has achieved a significant milestone on the international stage, rising to 41st place out of 215 Member National Associations worldwide in the latest World Taekwondo Governance and Performance Report for 2026.

This marks an impressive improvement of 23 positions compared to 2025, reflecting a year of structured development, improved governance, and growing international engagement.

According to the World Taekwondo report, Malta accumulated 50.5 points out of a possible 100, with particularly strong progress in governance, participation, and sustainability. Notably, Malta was classified within the A2 governance group, highlighting a solid framework in areas such as transparency, integrity, and organisational structure .

A New Era for Taekwondo in Malta

This achievement is especially significant given the relatively recent formation of the Malta Taekwondo Association. The current structure emerged following a period of transition in Maltese Taekwondo, culminating in the dissolution of the previous federation around 2021.

That period highlighted the need for a more modern, transparent, and athlete-focused governing body. Since then, the Malta Taekwondo Association has worked to rebuild the sport on strong governance principles aligned with World Taekwondo standards — placing emphasis on accountability, inclusivity, and long-term development.

The results of this approach are now becoming evident on the global stage.

Governance as a Foundation for Growth

One of the key drivers behind Malta’s rise has been its governance improvements. The World Taekwondo evaluation, which places heavy weighting on governance (50% of the total score), recognised Malta’s progress across multiple pillars including:

  • Transparency and publication of regulations

  • Integrity and safeguarding systems

  • Democratic structures and elections

  • Development frameworks for the sport

Malta achieved a governance score of 33 out of 50, a clear improvement from the previous cycle .

Recognition of a Dedicated Team

This progress is the result of the collective efforts of a committed team working behind the scenes to elevate the sport locally and internationally.

Key contributors include:

  • Johann Cassar (Treasurer)

  • Joanna Scicluna (Secretary)

  • Michelle Chircop (Administrator)

  • Sima Mifsud Calleja (Events Coordinator)

  • Anna Vassallo (President) – who also serves as a World Taekwondo Council Member and Vice President of the European Taekwondo Union

Their work has been instrumental in establishing strong administrative systems, improving compliance, and increasing Malta’s visibility within the global Taekwondo community.

Sporting Leadership and Technical Direction

Equally important has been the contribution of the technical leadership team:

  • Gianluca Barbara and Ditmir Vodinaj (National Coaches), who continue to guide athlete development and competitive preparation

  • Kristof Szucs (MTA Moderator), supporting governance and operational oversight

  • The clubs - Iron Taekwondo League, Strive Taekwondo and Birzebbuga Taekwondo Club - for working hand-in-hand together.

Their efforts are laying the groundwork for improved participation and future performance at international level.

Sustainability and Future Potential

Another standout achievement for Malta was securing maximum points in sustainability, including 1st place in the World Taekwondo Sustainability Awards (Environmental Sustainability category) .

This reflects a forward-thinking approach that aligns sport development with broader social and environmental responsibility.

Looking Ahead

While the ranking highlights strong progress, it also identifies areas for continued growth — particularly in competitive performance and hosting international events.

With a solid governance foundation now in place, the Malta Taekwondo Association is well positioned to build on this momentum, expand participation, and further strengthen its presence on the world stage.
