#83: Malta Taekwondo Association Joins Nature Trust for Gnejna Bay Clean-Up

On Saturday, 9th August, the Malta Taekwondo Association joined forces with environmental NGO Nature Trust for a community clean-up at one of Malta’s most picturesque coastal spots — Gnejna Bay.

Two local clubs, Iron Taekwondo League and Strive Taekwondo, came together with gloves, bags, and plenty of enthusiasm.

In just one morning, the group scoured the shoreline and surrounding areas, collecting 8 kg of litter and trash that had been carelessly left or washed ashore.

While the bay is beloved for its golden sands and crystal waters, it is unfortunately not immune to the effects of human neglect. Discarded items such as plastic wrappers, bottles, and cigarette butts were among the most common finds.

These seemingly small pieces of litter have a disproportionately large environmental impact:

  • Plastics can take hundreds of years to break down, during which they fragment into microplastics that are ingested by fish, seabirds, and even humans through the food chain.

  • Cigarette butts, though tiny, leach toxic chemicals like arsenic and lead into the water, harming marine life and polluting the surrounding ecosystem.

The clean-up was more than just an environmental effort — it was a powerful example of teamwork, discipline, and civic responsibility. Taekwondo athletes, who are accustomed to working together in training and competition, brought that same spirit to protecting their local environment.

“This was about more than just picking up trash,” said MTA President Anna Vassallo. “It’s about setting an example, showing that small actions can make a big difference, and that we all have a role to play in keeping Malta clean and beautiful.”

The Malta Taekwondo Association and Nature Trust hope that this initiative will inspire others — individuals, sports clubs, and organisations alike — to contribute to similar efforts.

Protecting the environment is a fight that requires the same focus, perseverance, and unity that Taekwondo teaches on the mat.
